NOTE: Before responding to this thread, make sure you've reviewed this thread for a few reminders... Hello all! I'd like to introduce you all to my first Sims 3 program, the 3Viewer! Purpose:The 3Viewer aims to be a Sims3Pack Installer, Editor, and overall Download Manager all without using the Launcher provided by EA. Think of it as the Sims 3 version of the Clean Installer with additional content management capabilities. This is necessary in my mind due to several reasons that will be expounded on in a separate post (link to be added here in a while after I post it). Current Features:Note that the 3Viewer is currently in a very rudimentary state. However, given that time is of the essence and I want to get on top of finding bugs and getting existing features working as soon as possible. - View any type of Sims3Pack file, including content from the store.
- Properly install the following types of Sims3Pack files: Sims, Households, Lots, Patterns, Objects and CASParts.
- Ability to integrate program into the Windows explorer shell, allowing you to associate .Sims3Pack files with the program to open them with it instead of the Launcher by default.
- Extract content from any other type of Sims3Pack for experimenting.
- Download management capabilities, including properly uninstalling content.
Planned Features:This is a list of features that I plan on implementing. Indeed, most of this is already partway there, it's just a matter of further experimentation and testing. - Full installation capabilities for all types of content without using the Launcher.
- Editing capabilities for Sims3Pack files, allowing you to delete content and re-save the Sims3Pack files initially, then add content as a later feature.
Current Known Issues:- It's kinda ugly. I know. Working on it.
- Lot's more, I'm sure...
Requirements:The program requires that you have the Java Runtime Environment installed to run. InstructionsDownload the 3Viewer0.1.3.zip file and extract it into a folder somewhere. Doesn't matter where. Windows Users: You may launch the program via either 3Viewer.exe or Sims3PackViewer.jar. Both should function identically. Let me know if there are problems that prevent you from using either. Mac Users: Launch the program using the Sims3PackViewer.jar file. Let me know if there are problems as I don't have a Mac to test on. Bugs, Suggestions and Other Problems:There are bound to be a lot of them at this stage. Please post them in this thread and this thread only! Final Notes:One of the biggest problems I've had with making this so far has been lack of content to test with. As a result, most of the installation process was designed and implemented today (I've been working on this non-stop for about 5 hours now, before that I had about a 3 hour break, and before that I worked on it for another 4 hours) so there are bound to be problems. However, now that the game is out, we're sure to see a flood of content. I'll continue to work on this as I get more to test with. I just got to see store content briefly and haven't been able to install it via the Launcher yet. Therefore any information about how that process works would be VERY much appreciated. Discussion on the subject can be found HERE. That said, enjoy the program. Hopefully it works fine for you all, so far anyhow...

BAWW! In Mac it quits immediatly. My specs are: Code: iMacIntel:~ Marhis$ java -version java version "1.5.0_16" Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_16-b06-284) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_16-133, mixed mode, sharing)
on MacOS X 10.5.7 Note: That version of java is the highest possible to install on Macs, at this moment, because Apple considers the 1.6.x still a beta and it doesn't allow installation by default; only with the developers program.

Oh geeze, I bet I compiled with 1.6 instead of 1.5. I'll recompile ASAP. EDIT: Marhis (or any other Mac users) please try the attached version and let me know if it works. It was a pain to convert everything back to 1.5. Macs really need to get 1.6 soon. EDIT 2: Get new version attached to first post.

Yeah! It opens! A weird issue too, maybe: the introductiory splash screen doesn't show - I know it exists because I've ran 3Viewer in Windows too. It is displayed only by a window bar segment; see the screenshot below. Attachment:

I can close the broken window, but the main windows remains unresponsible (both File and Help menu are disabled).

Ok so I tried to use this program as a download manager from the official store. For whatever reason it failed (more on that in a minute) but now I have no idea how to restore the java path in the official store back to the Launcher! Please help!
(the program said it failed to create directories, and didn't open anything when I tried to download the dress.)

(the program said it failed to create directories, and didn't open anything when I tried to download the dress.) The 3Viewer does NOT work as an installer for Store content. As said in the initial post, it only works for Sims, Lots, Households, and Patterns. I don't know what you're talking about with restoring the java path. The current version I have uploaded will not let you open files directly via the shell, just double click the Sims3Pack and it'll open with the Launcher. If it failed to create directories, you selected the wrong folder. Reread the instructions that show up when you first run the program.

I let it use the default directories.
Sorry, I should have read the intro better.. when I first downloaded content from the store, it let me choose a download manager (thus creating a file association) and now it won't go back to using the Launcher. So I wondered if you knew how to change it back.
Thanks!

Thanks! The default directories weren't default directories at all. They were just placeholders telling you where the directories should be located. I have no idea about the store, sorry, I've not used it. I didn't know that the EA Download Manager did anything that ridiculous. You'll probably have to reinstall at this point. That or try right clicking a Sims3Pack file, choose "Open With..." and browse to the location of the launcher. No idea if that'll work but try it.

I'll have to boot into my Ubunutu side and see what's up then. I wasn't going to bother but if you can actually run the sims 3 properly on linux, why not? Heh...... OK, well it's fixed now anyhow, I'll be uploading the new version tonight.

Are you using Firefox? I believe this is something you can change in the Preferences menu under "Applications" (I use a Mac, so sorry if it is named differently--look around, you'll find it). You just need to point it back to the Sims 3 Launcher in there and that should fix it. Sorry for the OT-ness, Jfade.
